Human Rights in the daily press

Technorati Tags: human rights , opinion, press

Lately I have had to follow the national and regional press, and I've been reading opinion columns. They address recurring themes that have relation with human rights and strikes me that the mention of these is usually done within a framework of such lightness that blurs originated in recognition of the inherent dignity and equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family . [1] is then raised rights as a way to establish a minimum level of respect for humankind to avoid undercutting the dignity of our fellowmen.

DD.HH. The reference to me particularly striking is that which appears related to recent episodes of crime are an important part of the contents of the media. It is common to see portrayed criminals as individuals who have lost their humanity, either because they are considered sick, either because they are intrinsically evil. And ideas come to those who commit crimes such as sending to an island prison , to implement laws similar to the Code of Hammurabi , to intervene medically, and against their will, to the criminals, to implement the arrest on suspicion ... Each one may add to this list.

In this scenario the DD.HH. not emerge as the ground of human dignity, but as a purely regulatory. I've talked to people, citing God's forgiveness, says the need to implement measures cruel and degrading treatment of offenders. There are police officers who say trying to meet an arrest accordance with the law for not receiving complaints "about human rights."

I do not think a trial of appropriate value in this scenario. Better or for worse, we can accept that the laws serve their purpose by fear of punishment rather than by an internalization of the discussion of who made these codes. What is striking is that what is considered the minimum necessary for human dignity is challenged by reference to events in the case of crime, and that challenge gaining a foothold in politics and public opinion. What we can demand greater accountability from those who are required to soften the DD.HH. merely looking for specific targets.

will now comment some articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights are frequently questioned:
  • Article 5: No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment. Here comes involuntary chemical castration, torture or relegation in precarious conditions (as raised by supporters of an island prison, where inmates take responsibility for their own support without outside help.)
  • Article 9: No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile. is the proposal to change the arrest on suspicion, finishing with a revolving door at the cost of imprisoning defendants not guilty, and send people to an island prison.
  • Article 11 1. Everyone charged of crime has the right to be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law in a public trial at which he has had all the guarantees necessary for his defense. consider this point because I find recursively the minimization of those who commit crimes, or stigmatization of certain areas, large sectors of society. I do not know whether or not these reactions influence on judges, but clearly violates the accused. For this is the next point.
  • Article 12: No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honor and reputation. Everyone is entitled to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks. At this point, also consider the so-called fourth estate the press. In Chile the impact television programs have participated in the violation of this article to charge people for activities that often have not been illegal, and when they are, the social punishment before the verdict of a court qualified.
  • Article 18: Everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion: this right includes freedom to change religion or belief, and freedom to manifest religion or belief, individually and collectively both public and private, teaching, practice, worship and observance. Has recently made news violence in political contexts, which has invalidated those who adhere to ideologies not represented in traditional politics, like National or some libertarian tendencies. I have not clear whether sexual orientation can be considered a manifestation of consciousness, and if so, they violated a judge visiting a sauna, and a judge declared for being lesbian mother .

me from all this raises several questions: Human rights are those necessary to safeguard human dignity? If so, Why are not recognized as fundamental in many parts and facing so many issues? If not the best, what should be? Or is it that we are part of a society that tends to the standard, where members avoid falling into the rejection that can differentiate them from others and question their human likeness? Da game issue, I hope your comments.
